A graphic designer salary in India starts at about ₹2.4 lakh a year for freshers and averages about ₹3.6 lakh a year, according to PayScale's July 2026 data. It also explains why two designers with the same years of experience can earn very different amounts.

Graphic designer salary per month

Most job offers in India are discussed as a yearly CTC, but most people think in monthly take-home. Here are the same figures divided by 12 (before tax and deductions):

Level Yearly figure About per month
Fresher, under 1 year (PayScale average) ₹2.41 lakh ₹20,000
1 to 4 years (PayScale average) ₹3.36 lakh ₹28,000
All levels (PayScale average base) ₹3.65 lakh ₹30,000
Top 10% (PayScale 90th percentile) ₹8.2 lakh ₹68,000

Indeed India showed an average of ₹27,186 a month for graphic designers in New Delhi in its data dated March 2024, which sits close to these figures.

Salary by experience in Delhi

AmbitionBox breaks its New Delhi data down by years of experience. The low end barely moves, while the top end keeps rising. That tells you experience alone does not raise pay. Skills and the work you show do.

Experience Yearly range (AmbitionBox, New Delhi)
1 year ₹1.2 lakh to ₹4.8 lakh
2 years ₹1.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh
3 years ₹1.9 lakh to ₹6 lakh
5 years ₹2.2 lakh to ₹7.2 lakh
7 years ₹2.6 lakh to ₹8 lakh

PayScale's separate New Delhi page (updated January 2025, 122 profiles) gives an average base salary of ₹3,10,065 a year, a little below its national figure. Delhi NCR has a very large number of designers, from small print shops to big agencies, so the range is wide.

Why two designers earn very different salaries

Two people can both say "3 years in graphic design" and one earns double the other. These are the usual reasons:

  1. Type of work. Basic DTP and print shop jobs usually pay at the lower end. Brand, campaign, packaging, UI and motion roles pay more.
  2. Type of employer. A local print shop, a mid-size agency, a D2C brand and a large tech company all pay differently for the same title.
  3. Portfolio quality. A portfolio with real thinking, clean typography and finished campaigns gets better offers than one with random practice pieces.
  4. Software range. Knowing Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign well, plus Photoshop Generative Fill and AI image tools, lets you handle more kinds of projects.
  5. Communication. Designers who can present ideas and handle client feedback get trusted with bigger accounts.
  6. City. Metro cities usually have more openings and higher pay than smaller towns, though remote work is closing part of this gap.

How to raise your graphic designer salary

You do not need to wait for yearly increments. These moves change what employers will pay you:

  1. Specialise in one area that pays. Branding, packaging, UI design or motion graphics. Build three or four strong projects in it.
  2. Add AI to your workflow. Many agencies now want designers who can use AI for moodboards, background plates and variations, then finish the work properly by hand.
  3. Learn a second skill next to design. Motion (After Effects), basic UI (Figma) or presentation design all widen the jobs you can apply for.
  4. Keep a "results" file. Note campaigns you designed and what happened, such as a launch that sold out. Use these in salary talks.
  5. Change jobs with a stronger portfolio. In design, the biggest pay jumps usually come when you join a new employer with better work to show.
  6. Freelance on the side carefully. A few steady clients raise your income and your portfolio, but check your employment contract first.

Fresher salary: what to expect and how to start higher

Your first offer depends mostly on what you can show on day one. A fresher with a focused portfolio of 8 to 12 real-looking projects, clean print files and a confident test task often gets offers above the starting average. A fresher with only certificates and tutorial copies usually starts at the bottom of the range.

Before you accept an offer, check these:

Check Why it matters
Fixed pay vs total CTC Some offers include bonuses or benefits that are not monthly cash
Probation period and review date Tells you when your first raise can happen
Type of work Varied work grows your portfolio faster than one repeated task
Software and hardware provided A slow computer slows your learning too

To find and win that first role, read our guide to graphic designer jobs in India.

Six factors that change a designer's pay: type of work, employer, portfolio, software range, communication and city
What actually moves a graphic designer's pay, beyond years of experience.

Is graphic design still a good earning career?

It depends on which kind of designer you become. In the US, the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects graphic designer jobs to fall by about 2 percent over 2025 to 2035, yet still shows around 16,000 openings every year from people leaving the job. The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 also expects plain production design work to shrink while UI and UX roles grow. India has no matching official forecast, but the same direction is visible in job posts here.

So the designers who earn more are the ones who bring ideas, brand thinking and AI skills, not only software clicks. We look at this closely in will AI replace graphic designers.

If you want to build those skills with real projects, our 6-month graphic design diploma covers the Adobe tools, CorelDraw, typography, branding and portfolio work. The AI graphic design course adds Photoshop Generative Fill and AI image tools to your workflow.

The bottom line

Graphic designer pay in India starts modest, around ₹20,000 a month for many freshers and averages about ₹30,000 a month according to PayScale's 2026 data. The top end is well above ₹8 lakh a year, but you get there through skills, specialisation and a strong portfolio, not just by adding years. Pick an area that pays, keep your portfolio sharp and use every job change to move up.
